Wedding Flowers
by Terri Krisavage

Flowers enhance the unique mood and style of your wedding day.  Selecting the right florist is the best way to ensure your wedding flowers will perfectly accent your special day.

Before you meet with a floral professional…gather ideas from bridal magazines and web sites of various floral styles and arrangements and gain a better sense of the mood and style you’d like to create on your wedding day.  Floral designs vary from traditional, modern and romantic and should incorporate personal touches to reflect your individuality.

Determine your budget…then determine a percentage for wedding flowers.  Typically, couples set aside 10-15% of their total budget for wedding flowers.  Most florists will work with you, and within your budget to create arrangements to meet your bridal floral needs.

Schedule an initial consultation… with a reputable florist who specializes in wedding flowers and bring along any information regarding your reception/ceremony location, swatches of bridesmaids dresses, or other pertinent aspects of your wedding that incorporate flowers.  It’s helpful to have a reception/ceremony location in mind while choosing wedding flowers, as certain locations offer customized features, such as outdoor sites and intricate interior architecture that may require floral treatments.  In addition, photographs or fabric samples of both your bridal gown and your bridesmaid’s dresses will better enable the florist to coordinate the colors and hues of your bouquets with the style and color of the gowns.

Work with your floral professional to determine your specific floral needs including bouquets and boutonnieres for the bridal party, reception arrangements and church flowers.  Most florists have photographs or samples of their work. This allows you to see their work and get ideas for your own wedding flowers. Your florist will also suggest designs and types of flowers to use based upon the style of your wedding and your personal taste.

Keep in mind…while discussing wedding flowers think of your other floral needs for related events, such as your bridal shower and rehearsal dinner. One week prior to your wedding, confirm delivery times and locations with your florist, as the brides’ and attendants’ bouquets are often delivered to different locations in addition to the reception facility and the church.
